The Top 5 Ways to Communicate with Your Pet for Non-Psychics
by Danielle MacKinnon

I've been working with animals professionally for over 10 years now, and not surprisingly, I've had the opportunity to learn a lot from them. What may surprise you, however, is how many different NON-PSYCHIC ways they’ve shown me that they are open to deepening their connection and communication with their humans! People usually assume that Animal Communicators must have the BEST relationships with their pets since they can “hear” every little thing their pets want them to know, but you know what? This isn’t always the case. As you'll see by this list, you don't have to be psychic to have a superior connection with your pet; you just have to be willing to try out some new things.

1. Send the Right Picture

Animals connect simply and clearly through images, all the time, every day in every way. How else do you think two dogs thirty yards apart in a field know EXACTLY when to spring upon each other? To deepen the relationship with your pet, it’s important to work with this idea instead of against it as most people do. Have you ever told a dog to get off the sofa by yelling "Get off the sofa!"? What are you picturing in your head when you say this? You’re picturing the dog on the sofa, of course, which is the opposite of what you want to have occur. The same thing happens when someone says to you, "Don't think about the pink elephant." You immediately think of a pink elephant! It's important, then, that you align the images you're holding in your head with what you are speaking. When you want your dog to get off the sofa, say "Go to your bed,” or “Go lie down." When you do this, the image you are sending your pet matches the words you are communicating perfectly and you’ll find that the two of you are much more in sync. Giving the animal the exact action you want him to perform in words and in visuals will help you achieve the desired result: a couple that understands one another.

2. Manage Your Energy

Animals are also incredibly sensitive to energy - much more sensitive than humans are. If you're looking for your cat, dog, or even your Parrot to be very calm and serene, managing your energy is really the best way to achieve this. You have surely experienced meeting a new person and knowing at that very moment that you don’t like that person. This is based on your human ability to read the energy that a person holds. Animals have this ability as well and over time have trained their senses to detect even the smallest emotional or energetic shift in a person. Knowing this, it becomes very important that your energy communicate to your pet what you want it to. If you are feeling upset or anxious about work, and you sit down to pet your dog, your dog may translate your anxiety as being about him (which is both inaccurate and undesirable) and may in fact begin feeling anxious or upset himself. For the best connection, be sure you are calm, clear and grounded before hanging out with your pet. If you're having a difficult time with this, take a break and go calm or clear yourself - perhaps even a walk outside will help you get your emotions in check. Remember, you can't hide your emotions from your pet (they will sense any negative energy!) so if you're upset, they’re going to know it. Just take a few minutes to ground yourself and you’ll find you reap much more from your relationship with your pet.

3. Keep Your House Clear

Negative energy can linger in an environment for days, weeks or even years. Have you ever walked into a room and suddenly felt sad or angry? This shows how a room, home, car or even an outdoor space can hold on to a negative energy. Animals are particularly sensitive to this. Their survival has depended on their ability to detect even the smallest shifts in their environment. People, however, don’t often clue in to these types of energies. Many people release their deep held emotions in their homes. They feel frustration in their office, sadness in their bedroom, loneliness in their living room… When a negative energy is in a room, it's much easier to feel that emotion that energy is linked to. For example, if your mother-in-law just visited and she made everybody in the house anxious, the house will maintain that anxiety energy. Now, bring your cat Lucy into that room and she is going to feel that anxiety herself. How well do you think you'll be able to connect and hang out with Lucy if the energy all around you is that of anxiety? A very simple solution to this is to smudge your house with sage. You can purchase a small stick of sage at almost any health food store. Light the end of the sage stick on fire, and walk around your home allowing the smoke from the stick to fill each and every crevice in your house. As you do this, hold the intention that this is clearing out any lingering negative energy. When the energy in your environment is clean and clear, it allows for the connection between you and your pet to be deeper, more satisfying, and often more fun!

4. No Pity Parties

Animals are also very sensitive to what people think about them. They know when you feel happy for them, sad, anxious about them, and they especially know when you feel bad for them. Many humans feel terribly for their aging pets. And, when people feel badly about something they often make decisions that aren't necessarily for the greatest and highest good of everyone involved. For example: Sally’s cat has been very sick for months and because Sally feels badly about that, she decides to give Cushy any type of food he wants – from fish to potatoes to Cheetos. While doing this makes Sally feel better (at least he has food he loves while he’s so sick), her choice isn’t actually helping Cushy who develops digestive problems. Animals don't want people to feel badly for them. They want people to be strong, clear, proactive and fun – even when things are tough, even when they are feeling sick. Taking time to hang out with your pet in a positive, happy mood and to create new experiences with your pet will go a lot further in the end than making decisions out of guilt that really don't serve everybody.

5. Use the Telephone

Although it may seem like a goofy idea, the technique of using a telephone to communicate with your pet actually works. Since animals are so good at connecting telepathically, they can pick up the messages that you send them even if you’re not telepathically inclined. Think about using the phone with a friend. First you "call" them, then you have a conversation in which you tell them what you want them to know. Your pet is very much the same - all you have to do is use your imagination. First call your pet on “the phone” by thinking about him or her. Your thought is like dialing his or her phone number. Next, start talking to him as if you are on the phone. You can say things like, "I just wanted you to know I won't be home until 10 o'clock tonight," or "Sally will be coming by at noon to take you for a walk. I'm sorry I can't make it today." Your pet – whether dog, cat, horse, fish – uses energetic communication every day and will understand and be grateful for the message that you are sending. While it may seem weird, all you have to do is believe that you're doing it. You don't have to be psychic to do this because your pets already are.

As you can see, there are a lot of ways to connect with your pet that don't depend on you developing your psychic abilities. Take some time and try these methods for yourself – people learn best through hands-on experience. If you want to take your connection even further, consider learning animal communication as well – but don't think that you're up the creek without a paddle because you don't know animal communication yet. Animals want nothing more than to have a wonderful, secure, safe relationship with their humans, and any effort that you make to communicate better with them will be received gratefully and lovingly.
