Following the Chilean earthquake in 2010 the earth axis shifted a few cm making days very slightly shorter. The Italian Geophysical Institute has just announced that the latest quake in Japan has now shifted the earth's axis a further 10cm. The Pacific faults are very deep and have the inherent capacity of affecting the earth axis more greatly than quakes occurring in other areas of the world. This will make days somewhat shorter still. Do I hear the word "quickening"?
