(EDUCATION MANIFESTO) Empowerment - Putting Students First "Homeroom"

There is a lot of pressure put on teachers. With standards, test scores, teacher effectiveness evaluations, etc., it is no mystery that the teaching profession, although rewarding, is truly a challenging one.

Regardless of what professional and/or personal stresses I’m dealing with, I remind myself to never put pressure on my students. They already are dealing with their own stresses, and they don’t need anymore of it, especially from me, their teacher. They don’t deserve it.

My classroom is filled with diverse learners, and I try to unite the class as a whole, yet still honor the individual.

Class motto: Honor and Respect. We must honor and respect not only one another, but ourselves as well. We must also respect life and all living things. We show honor through our sincere commitment to respect and through our actions. Everything done in the class is done the right way.

Classroom Rules:

Be Safe

Be Early

Focus and Execute

Stay Positive

Courage Wanted

Be Safe – We create safe environments through safe, not fearful, thoughts and actions.

Be Early – Be ready to take on the task before showing up. Be mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually prepared prior to. Also be willing to be flexible.

Focus and Execute - The task we are facing with is where we devote our energy and focus. Our minds are not fantasizing in the past or present. We are engaged in the task 110% and we lay ourselves fully (mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually) into what we are doing, always making sure to follow through.

Stay Positive – To promote a positive learning community, we need to promote positive learners. To promote positive learners, we need to promote positive attitudes, thinking, and interactions consistently. No complaining, defeatism speaking/thinking, or negative actions are allowed. Students CAN do this.

Courage Wanted – Courage is the driving force through adversity. We may find ourselves in fear and doubt many times throughout the day. With the class motto and rules, students are encouraged to speak and voice their thoughts and feelings. Students are also encouraged to take action towards what they feel in their heart is right. Fear is only a limitation that we believe in ourselves, and through courage, we claim our power.

Class Goal: Contentment – We are not defined by our achievements or possessions, but instead by our character. Regardless of any outcome, if we honor and respect our character, we honor and respect ourselves and each other; and for that, we are free to be.
