Maltreatment of the elderly is not just a matter of some professionals in some homes!
Every day in hospital specialty of confused elderly Alzheimer's type, hospitalized for intercurrent disease (pulmonary or urinary tract infection, fracture .....) are victims of injuries and physical and moral abuse.
With these patients, inappropriate restraint is often the rule by untrained caregivers to take care of such patients agitated, more confused because of their hospitalization.
A recent in a hospital in my department: a patient Alzheimer's arms and legs tied up all night with bands Velpeau that everyone knows the elasticity! Strengthened links regularly caused a swelling of the hands and feet, major burns, blisters and bare flesh at the wrists. Besides of course, the moral distress of this patient lost, left unattended, not understanding why he was treated like that all night crying in pain and peur.Ce fact is far from isolated.
The less "evil" of abuse is to leave these patients completely naked, arms and legs tied in a cross. The families discovered the morning and arriving in the ward where they were directed, after passing emergency.
Lack of training services to specialty hospitals care for these patients more and more, has dramatic consequences, and the weight of the routine ... but common sense is also sorely lacking.
Many patients suffer from Alzheimer's or related example in these services, dehydration, without the need of having a heatwave! The staff makes a pitcher of water on the bedside table, changing the water as the routine wants ... ... without noticing that the water level has not dropped an inch.
These patients are unable to think of drinking for many reasons, but primarily because the carafe is not in their sight!
The same problem occurs with the meal tray and they do not eat because nobody thought to open their dishes and put a fork or spoon in hand. Unfortunately, we could multiply the examples.
If these patients are not fortunate enough to have a family that comes every day, the inadequacy of the hospital to meet their basic needs is an abuse to very serious consequences.
really admire your work, Khelil.I
