a poem i wrote today, "with minds intact"

Next week my husband and I travel to see my Mom, who has pretty advanced Alzheimers disease. she lives in another state near one of my siblings. This may be the last time we visit where she will be able to talk at all. She was a teacher, well traveled, and spoke at least three languages well. Now she can not remember much at all. Here is a poem I wrote about this anticipared visit, called "with minds intact":

it may be
the last time
i’ll see you
this time around
you go too soon
how do i
find the words
the hug
a drop of anything
to reach
what is left of you?
the tears roll
down my cheeks...
what is left
of your mind
is such a small fraction
of the brilliance
that lit up a room
a teacher, you were
and still are
for now we learn
the beauty of
your essence
still peeks through,
though now is fading fast,
and your childlike wonder
in recent years
with no memory
of past,
nor future antcipated,
you lived fully
in each moment
why can’t we
with minds intact
do the same?
